Writer: Luke, a Gentile and the "beloved physician" (Colossians ), a friend But there was a man named Ananias who, with this wife Sapphira had sold a piece of property, but with her full knowledge, reserved part of the price for himself.

The story of Ananias and Sapphira and indeed, the book of Acts are of great importance because it informs the reader on the history of the primitive church at Jerusalem. Fee and Stuart point out that the author, Luke, is a Gentile whose narrative could be seen as a source of Hellenistic. For those who hold to a warped theology that says God was only a God of judgment and wrath in the Old Testament but changed in the New Testament, I think the account of the death of Ananias and Sapphira as told in the Book of Acts is a sobering story to take a good look at.

Ananias and Sapphira not only lied, but they purposed to cheat God and see how He would respond, a most serious matter. Thus, God struck Ananias and Sapphira dead right there on the spot. Here are some interesting side-notes worthy of our consideration, especially in light of how we relate to this incident of Ananias and Sapphira.   The deaths of Ananias and Sapphira do not seem to fit with the narrative just before the text and after it. Why does Luke interrupt his account with this depressing story? First of all, we need to understand that our text is not an interruption in the flow of the book. In fact, the first word of Acts should be “But”, not “Now”.
